Clinical Trials

As part of our commitment to excellence in cancer care, Beaufort Memorial Hospital's Keyserling Cancer Center offers a clinical trials program.

The program gives cancer patients in Beaufort, S.C., and the surrounding area the opportunity to receive cutting-edge cancer therapies that otherwise might not be available to them.

“Clinical trials are critical to the development of new cancer treatments and can be life saving, or life-prolonging, to those patients who have exhausted their cancer treatment options,” says BMH Oncology Services Medical Director Majd Chahin, MD, principal investigator for the program.

The cancer center staff works closely with the Duke oncology network to choose trials that are appropriate for people in the Beaufort area. To date, many of the trials have been focused on the most common forms of cancer found in the area: lung, breast, colon and prostate.

The clinical trials program is approved by the Cancer and Leukemia Group B (CALGB), a national clinical research group sponsored by the National Cancer Institute, with its central office at the University of Chicago and its statistical center located at Duke University.

Beaufort Memorial Hospital is currently offering the following trials, or protocols, for eligible breast and colon cancer patients in Beaufort and the surrounding area:

  • Protocol PACCT/Tailrox
Protocol PACCT/Tailrox for women with Stage l, ll or lll breast cancer will study the use of a new diagnostic test called the Oncotype DX (Genomic Health, Inc., Redwood, Calif.) to determine which early breast cancer patients are or are not likely to benefit from chemotherapy.
  • Protocol 369901
Protocol 369901 looks at issues faced by women 65 or older when making decisions about treatment for Stage l through lll breast cancer to help doctors improve their care in the future.
  • Protocol E5202
Protocol E5202 is for Stage ll colon cancer patients and will study two molecular markers found in tumor cells that may predict which patients would benefit from standard chemotherapy versus both chemotherapy and Avastin after surgery.
  • Protocol 80405
Protocol 80405 is for people with newly diagnosed metastatic colorectal cancer and will study whether people without a specific genetic mutation may benefit from chemotherapy treatment with Avastin and/or Erbitux.
  • Protocol NSABP R 04
Protocol NSABP R 04 is for stage ll through lll rectal cancer patients and will compare the use of chemotherapy and radiation therapy to help shrink the tumor before it is surgically removed.
