The Birthing Center

After Delivering

After delivery, you will spend your recovery in your labor/delivery/recovery (LDR) room. After you’ve spent some time together, your baby is taken to the nursery where your baby’s identification is verified and he or she is weighed and placed in a warming unit.

Nursery procedures

  • The pediatrician is notified of your baby’s birth.
  • Your infant is weighed and measured.
  • Antiseptic is applied to the umbilical cord.
  • Vitamin K and injections are given upon admission to the nursery.
  • Eye medicine is given to the baby to prevent infection.
  • After three hours of transitional care, your baby is bathed, dressed and placed in a nursery crib.
  • Special requests regarding feeding should be directed to the nursery staff.
  • Parental consent is required for circumcision.
  • Physical exams are given by the pediatrician.
  • Rooming with your baby is encouraged.
  • Babies are brought back to the nursery at shift changes to be assessed, and then are returned to you.
  • You may return your baby to the nursery any time you desire.
  • You may breastfeed your baby at any time.
  • Bassinets contain all items needed for baby care.
  • PKU and T-4 testing is done before the day of discharge.

Postpartum facilities

  • All rooms are equipped with a bathroom, telephone and television.
  • A kitchen is available for snacks.
  • You will have a choice of meal selections from a daily menu.

Daily routine
