The Birthing Center
Born to Read Program
Born To Read is a volunteer program to encourage early literacy. Volunteers are trained to assist new mothers in understanding the importance of reading to their babies from birth. A packet of supporting materials are given to the new mothers, including baby's first book. Other supportive literacy opportunities are offered to the new mothers, including information on how to get a GED, and programs for English as a second language. Also, efforts are made to link new mothers and their babies to a "medical home" to ensure both have appropriate follow-up care.
Born To Read is a collaborative program between a number of area agencies including the Beaufort County School District, the Beaufort County Library, Literacy Volunteers of the Lowcountry, Lowcountry DHEC, and others.
