Keyserling Cancer Center
Cancer care closer to home
Beaufort Memorial Hospital's Keyserling
Cancer Center is affiliated with Duke University Medical
Center to offer area residents the latest in cancer treatment
close to home. Not only was the facility designed with the
guidance of DUMC clinical staff, but BMH also partnered with
Duke to incorporate a healing arts approach to the Center.

The 25,000 sq. ft. facility houses a state-of-the-art linear accelerator, as well as other computerized hardware and software to ensure that cancer patients receive the latest and best in radiation treatment. Medical oncology is offered on the opposite side of the building through Sea Island Medical Oncology, Dr. Majd Chahin's practice. Dr. Chahin is also medical director of BMH's oncology program.
Until the Cancer Center opened, cancer patients living in northern Beaufort County needing radiation therapy have been required to travel out of the area to receive this increasingly common cancer treatment. Broad-based community support has played a critical role in making the Cancer Center a reality. Half the project costs were underwritten through gifts and grants, primarily from local residents.
Duke University Medical Center is ranked among the top 10 cancer treatment sites in the nation. Through the affiliation with Duke, Beaufort Memorial’s goal for the Keyserling Cancer Center is to have it designated a Community Hospital Cancer Program by the American College of Surgeons. This is expected to be accomplished by 2010.
