Beaufort Memorial Hospital | Affiliated with Duke University Health System in heart and cancer

Keyserling Cancer Center

Patient Testimonials: Terry Farr

When Terry Farr was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2006, getting the best cancer treatment available was her number one priority. Fortunately, she knew she could get it right here in Beaufort. “My husband [Tom] and I have lived in Beaufort for years, so I was obviously familiar with the hospital,” she says.

She also knew that Beaufort Memorial Hospital had just opened a full-service cancer treatment facility, the Keyserling Cancer Center, and that the hospital was affiliated with Duke University Health System for cancer services. “Knowing that the cancer facility we had here was so good and had the connection with Duke…until I was diagnosed with cancer and had to begin treatment I didn’t know how important all of this would be to me,” she says. Terry underwent a lumpectomy, followed by chemotherapy and, later, radiation therapy.

She was impressed that the cancer center offered the latest in radiation therapy technology, but it was her experiences with the staff that left the most lasting impression on her. “They were wonderful and they became like family to me,” Terry recalls. “They were always upbeat, sunny and warm. Always. I really felt like they were my friends, like they completely understood me.”

Today Terry is back to work as a part-time bookseller at Bay Street Traders, a locally owned bookstore in downtown Beaufort. She says she would highly recommend the Keyserling Cancer Center to anyone newly diagnosed with cancer. “I received such great care and was constantly surrounded by people who were capable and caring,” says Terry. “Having such a wonderful facility this close to home is incredible.”
